Forum: GratefulDead Subject: I Need Help With '83 Shows

I was putting my collection in order today and to my shock I find I have only 2 1983 shows, 10/15/83 and 10/22/83. Please give me some recomendations! Also '82 and '84 aren't looking too great either. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

82' 4.3.82 Decent AUD unique performances of Scarlet> Fire, NFA & EYES
4.6.82 Killer Shakedown, a strong 1st set, kiler Other One, Baby Blue to close all together a sizzle of a show from the gate

83' Check out April tour. stream those babies first I'm partial to
4.9.83 cause I was there, lots of Help>Slip>Franklins were performed that month
10.9.83 Greensboro is no slouch either, great recording decent performance

84' did not produce too many gems except:
10.12.84 10.20.84

82 is a great year all around with good soundboards and auds available. My favorites would be:

4-14-82 Glen Falls
4-19-82 Baltimore
8-1-82 Zoo
8-10-82 Iowa

1983 is a little more hit or miss but here are some of the better shows:

4-13-83 Vermont
9-2-83 Boise
9-10 & 9-11-83 Sante Fe

10/17/1983- Solid Sugaree opener. Many see a Sugaree opener and pass right on by but this one is well...solid. To Lay Me Down is heartfelt and moving. Samson smokes. The two 83 shows you already have are always considered to be a couple highlight shows of this year in particular but 10/17, sandwiched in between, does not disappoint in any way.

6/28/83- Nothing huge, monumental or stellar about this show, but I've always found it listenable and worthwhile. Highlights would include Dire, It's All Over Now and Looks Like Rain. While there are many versions of each from other shows that many would consider "better" they help make this show what it is... listenable and worthwhile.

8/10/82- Ummm... WOW. Stranger (if you don't particualrly care for stranger, give this one a shot) sets the tone and things only get better from there including a HOT Miracle>Bertha. China Cat>IKYR is played like the consistent mainstay it is. The Baby Blue encore number is one of the best I've heard, period, and the Sugar Mags that precedes is no slouch either. The Eyes is quite possibly the best of the year and one of my favorites from any.

12/31/1984- Well, well, well, what to say about this show? This show took place at a very emotional time for the band, especially Jerry, as it came right on the heels of Steve's family (first wife and children) meeting an untimely ending as the result of a car accident. The emotion felt by all but, again, especially Jerry is evident throughout the show.
Highlights would include a booming Shakedown opener, solid Peggy-O and Jack and a strong Wheel. I've always gotten a lot out of the Scarlet>Fire from this show, especially the jam that segues the two. The Baby Blue that closes down the show (though not "musically" as efficient as the one from 8/10/82) touches the heart in ways almost unspeakable as it is quite evident that it is played and silently dedicated to Steve. Jerry's voice faulters a bit, but rightfully so. How could it not?
